It shows the main islands of the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily, Elba, Malta, Sardinia, Corfu and Djerba, in the window of Malta you can see a sinking vessel, supposed to represent the shipwreck of San Paolo which took place off the island. Engraved by Abraham Ortelius (also Ortels, Oertel, Orthellius, Latinized as: Abrahamus Ortelius and Italianized to Abraham Ortelio) (Antwerp, 14 April 1528 - Antwerp, 28 June 1598) was a Flemish cartographer. Ortelius was with Mercator the great founder of Flemish cartography.
