Insularum aliquot Maris Mediterranei descriptio. Beautiful copper engraving of 1587. Measurement of the plate 36.6 x 47.8 cm. It shows the main islands of the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily, Elba, Malta, Sardinia, Corfu and Djerba, in the window of Malta you can see a sinking vessel, supposed to represent the shipwreck of San Paolo which took place off the island. Bibl. Van Den Broecke 141 (1587). The print is in excellent condition. Printed on laid paper with watermark. Text on the reverse in Latin. Engraved by Abraham Ortelius (also Ortels, Oertel, Orthellius, Latinized as: Abrahamus Ortelius and Italianized to Abraham Ortelio) (Antwerp, 14 April 1528 - Antwerp, 28 June 1598) was a Flemish cartographer. Ortelius was with Mercator the great founder of Flemish cartography.
