Italia Antiqua. Copper engraving of 1640. Measurement of the engraved part 28.8 x 34.6 cm. Map based on the map of Cluverio, extracted from "itinerarium Italiae" by Martin Zeiller. Exemplary in good condition, printed on laid paper without watermark. Engraved by Matthaus Merian the Elder (Basel, September 22, 1593 - Bad Schwalbach, June 19, 1650), he was a Swiss national engraver and draftsman who worked in Germany. A pupil of Dietrich Meyer in Zurich, where he learned engraving techniques. In 1616 he went to settle in Frankfurt am Main where he worked for Johann Theodor de Bry (1528-1598), whose daughter Maria Magdalena married the following year. Matthäus Merian died after long years of illness in 1650.
