Crex Pratensis. Beautiful printing lithography of 1865 with excellent coloring era. Measuring 38 cm x 56. It depicts a pair of quail with real small , a dragonfly flies over them . The print is in excellent condition . Lithograph engraved by John Gould (1804 - 1881) was a British naturalist and ornithologist . Between 1832 and 1837 he published The Birds of America , operates in 5 volumes and 448 lithographed plates and colored by hand . For the gigantic undertaking Gould earned him the help of his wife and the famous English poet and painter Edward Lear . After a trip to Australia and Tasmania , published with the help for the first volumes of Elizabeth ( his wife ) , The Birds of Australia ( 1840-1848 ) in 7 volumes and 600 tables , which followed between 1851 and 1869 a Supplement of 81 tables . In 1841 Gould 's wife died in childbirth . While not finding peace for the loss , Gould was able to publish other notable works , especially using the collaboration of talented lithographers ( Henry Constantine Richter and William Hart ) and artists ( Joseph Wolf ) . The best result was the appearance between 1862 and 1873 of The Birds of Great Britain , in 5 volumes and 367 lithographed plates and colored by hand , from drawings by Gould and Wolf .
