Son of a florentine goldsmith, Francesco Bartolozzi learn the first rudiments of the engraving on copper just in the father's shop. Diligent student of him processors's works, till by the first samples, Bartolozzi shows the inclination to devote himself especially to the translation of others peolpe's inventions, developing that professionality and technical capacity that will permit him to translate others artists's ideas and style. He enrol very young to the Academy of Drawer of Florence, where he attends the lessons of the painter Ignazio Hugford, with who he collaborates to the achievement of the collection 'I Cento Pensieri di Anton Domenico Gabbiani pittore fiorentino'. In this occasion he meet the Deutch engraver Joseph Wagner and in the shop of him, the most important of Venice, Bartolozzi goes in the August of 1748. In the lagoon city Bartolozzi remains for 16 years, taking part to the artistic life and being in touch with the grater publishers and printers, besides with learning men, collector and musicians. In this years Bartolozzi translate in engraving the greater contemporary artists' operas, such as Pietro Longhi (Il Farmacista, Lezioni di canto) and Piazzetta. In the 1756 Bartolozzi is in Rome, where he starts to work for the Copperplate Engraving, founded in 1738 by Pope Clemente XII Corsini. Between the Roman errands there are the pourtraits for the 'Vite' by Vasari, the series of engravings by Domenichino' s frescoes in Grottaferrata (1756 - 1757), the 'Ritratto di Domenico Lazzarini'. From 1760 is again in Venice where he starts to alternate operas and reproductions with Wagner and autonomous engravings, such as the series dedicated to Guercino to wich he devote himself between 1761 and 1765. In these years Bartolozzi became the regular of a own shop and he get married. For the tiphography Albrizzi he do the tables for the 'Studi di pittura' by the M. Zocchi's opera he engrave the series of the Months, one of the few subjects with views and one of the most high Venetian period's expression. In England, where he remain for about fourty years, Bartolozzi especially devote himself to the activity of tanslation, alternating with the same success the interpretation of the famous painter's operas of the past and the ones of contemporary artists. Besides to the draws by Guercino, Bartolozzi do paintings by Carracci, Pietro da Cortona, Guido Reni, Carlo Maratta. Member of the Incorporated Society of Artists, in 1768 Bartolozzi is one of the Royal Academy os Arts' founders: the engravers were excluded, so the artist was admitted as painter, stiring up the envy of the others artists. In England he meet Angelica Kaufmann, to who is very near. An important part of the English activity is dedicated to the pourtrait - painter (especially to Joshua Reynolds), also if the most translated artist is, without doubt, G. B. Cipriani, friend of Academy. The last years of stay in London are also dedicated to the 'Paradiso Perduto''s illustration by Milton, and he deal with storical - literary matters. In november 1802 Bartolozzi leave England and he goes to Portugal: Lisbon is for the elderly artist a social goal and the fulfilment of a long and brillant career. Rigorous and attent to the detail and to the purity of the sign, Bartolozzi conclude his career as director of the 'Aula de Gravura', where he has the merit to conceive a large group of pupils and to contribute to the born of an engraving portuguese school.
