| Description: Veduta della Villa Estense in Tivoli. Etching in very good state, wide margins. Hind 105. 3rd state of three 1773. Cm 46,5 x 71. G. B. Piranesi.Artist, engraver and architect. Born in Morano di Mestre on October 4th, 1720, died in Rome on November 9th, 1778.
He was called the “Rembrant of architecture”. He reproduced the antique vestiges of powerful Rome and was one of the most authoritative archeologists of his time. He was a pupil of Scalfarotto, of Giuseppe and Domenico Valeriani and of Bibiena. He worked for Giuseppe Vasi and was his pupil. They had a harsh relationship that brought Piranesi to think about killing his master because of the envy Vasi felt towards him, Vasi in fact did not teach him all the secrets of the “morsura”. It seems that he worked together with Tiepolo as a painter. His first work is “Le Antichità Romane” that precedes many others. He engraved about 2000 copper plates , many of which are very big. His work never made him rich because of the low prices he applied but he did gain great fame and a very good reputation. He was a member of the “Ordine di Cristo”and of the Antiquarians Society of London. |
