| Description: Via Crucis..Etching XVIII century. Cm 33,3 x 22,5. This devotion was wanted and spreaded by Franciscans, who inciting the people to the conversation, they helped him to think about the Jesus' great love, who for our love embraced the cross and invite us to fallow him every day "tending our crosses." The Saint who succeded to increase the Via Crucis' practice in a extraordinary way was Saint Leonard by Porto Maurizio, who preached in every city of Papal State. Besides he evangelized for 20 years the Tuscany and he spent the last 20 years of his life in Rome where his vocation to be Saint Francisco's friar in the S. Bonaventura monastery revealed itself. The Saint get by Pope Benedetto XIV the permit to built the Via Crucis stations not only in the Franciscan churches, but in every church. It was him to do built the 14 Via Crucis stations in Colosseum, during the Holy Year of 1750. The today's practice is that to add the XV station : the Jesus Resurrection, who have defeated the death for ever. So the way doesn't stop it self to the Calvary but it lead us to the Resurrection. The Apostle Paolo says : "If Christ wasn't died, it would be useless our faith." Also if the station (14) were fixed by S. Leonard in 1756, the iconography is very old, because it put in evidence the God' s passion. Durer still engrave them in a masterly way so all the great engraver centred their work making stand out the Easter: from the Holy Thursday to the Resurrection' s Dawn. |
